Majorca Travel Blog #1

Wednesday 31st July 2013.

Day 0: The Holiday After The Night Before.

Map of Majorca Provided for Tourists at Hotel.

The Coast of Cala Bona/Cala Millor.

Off to Majorca (Mallorca) tomorrow.

Cala Bona to be more precise, mere meters from its coastal twin Cala Millor and I already know what to expect.

It's familiar territory for our household as we've taken trips here every summer for the past few years. Same company, same travel agent, same hotel and same location. Always slap bang in the heart of the action.

Every year seems to top the last, only this time it's for real. That's right I've decided to take the plunge, this'll be my last family holiday. Perhaps even my penultimate holiday abroad in a long while considering the student budget doesn't allow for luxuries.

You may wonder why we choose to go to the same place every year?

I'd be lying if I didn't say it had a rare quality that sticks with you, like sand to your dampened soles. From haunting human statues to symbolic sandcastles and fancy fiery flamenco. They're even generous enough to throw in dodgy tribute acts for good measure. It has everything you could possibly want from a holiday (minus the cheap booze). Here's why:

1. There's always a beach nearby.
Walk along the promenade and you're bound to pass at least two, maybe three sandy spots (if you're feeling adventurous).

2. Giant inflatables.
Kids seem to love getting their sweat on in the heat, even if it does mimic being eaten alive by an inflatable dinosaur with a bad case of dropjaw.

3. All you can eat buffet.
Stocking up for the winter season with homemade rice pudding and over seasoned meat dishes. Potentially more dehydrating that the heat itself but a good incentive to drink the bottled water available.

Avoid drinking the tap water. Unless of course you're washing your face, then it proves to be more effective than any other kind of spot prevention.

4. Lemonade.
Just adds that extra flavour when served in a flimsy paper cup, stacked with ice and an added wedge of lemon. Enjoyed best when sat by the pool... table.

5. Souvenir stalls.
Care for an inappropriate gift? Think I'll just settle for a family friendly postcard.

6. The natives.
Because they are always so welcoming, even if most of the things you talk about are lost in translation.

7. The humidity.
Gives your hair that added volume. Because you're worth it.

And so, this travel blog aims to document my final experiences on this dry, dusty and tourist packed island.

See you on the other side.
