WINOL (20/03/2013)



This week, WINOL's News Bulletin was a #Budget2013 Special. As part of the Features/Production Team, I was volunteered to book the guests - this was crucial as it mean't the bulletin would be legally safe and balanced. 

My struggle with News last semester made this a very daunting task. I was, however, able to get the contact details of a Labour Party Member from one of the News Team.

Chancellor of Exchequer George Osbourne delivered his budget speech at approx. 12:30 pm - A "budget for people who aspire to work hard and get on".

Expectations:

- Increase in Government Spending. (Amount spends/receives in Tax)
  - Cut by nearly 25% over 3 years (2009-2012).
  - Effective until 2017/2018 NOT 2014/2015.

- Alcohol Taxes 2% above Inflation (April 2013)
- Suspension of Fuel Increase (Unexpected?)

- Increase Personal Tax Allowance to £10,000 (amount earned before pay Tax)
- Cut Large Company Rate to 20% (Encourage public spending?)

Results:

- Planned Fuel and Beer Duty Rise Scrapped.
  - 1p Duty on Pint (other alcohol duties still rise)
  - Price of 20x Packet Cigarettes and Rolling Tobacco increase 26p.
  - Fuel 13p per litre cheaper.

- New Mortgage Guarantee to help Small Deposits (£130 Billion)

- No Income Tax on First £10,000 Earnings (2014)
  - Allow individuals to keep more of their wage. 

- £2,000 off National Insurance Bills (Reduce Unemployment) 

- Corporation Tax reduced to 20% (April 2015)
 - Support Small Businesses.
